This year my World War 1 commemorative website, "The Empire Called and I Answered: the volunteers of Essendon and Flemington, 1914-1918", has clocked up ten years.
You can check out family members from the local area who enlisted, or find out who enlisted from your street, or even your house.
About 4,500 volunteers left from Essendon, Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds, Flemington, Kensington and Newmarket. Our latest story is about Major Johnston Hughston, a doctor who served in a Casualty Clearing Station on the front line in Salonika, a seldom mentioned theatre of war.
Worked at the Melbourne Herald and was, at various times, Publicity/Marketing Manager/Director at Random House, Macmillan and Angus & Robertson Publishers
